The visage of a majestic king

In the city of Ajmer, Rajasthan, lies Prithviraj Smarak - a place of historical significance dedicated to the memory of Prithviraj Chauhan, a famous Rajput king who ruled over Ajmer and Delhi in the 12th century. Prithviraj Chauhan was renowned for his valour, bravery, and military skills as he defended his kingdom from foreign invasions. The monument stands as a lasting symbol of his illustrious heritage and the fearlessness of the Rajput warriors who defended their land and dignity.

As you enter the memorial site, you will encounter a black stone statue of Prithviraj Chauhan mounted on a horse, embodying his bravery and knightly spirit. The statue, with the horse depicted with one of its front hooves raised, creates the impression of moving forward. Situated on top of a hill, the memorial offers sweeping views of the city of Ajmer, with the Aravalli range circling around it. Additionally, you can relax and unwind in the garden adjacent to the memorial.

The tale of a heroic king

Prithviraja III, also known as Prithviraj Chauhan, was a king from the Chauhan dynasty. He was the last Hindu king of Delhi who bravely led a coalition of several Rajput kings to defeat the Ghurid army led by Muhammad of Ghor in 1191. However, in 1192, Muhammad returned with an army of Turkish mounted archers and defeated the Rajput king and his army on the same battlefield. His defeat at Tarain is considered a significant event in the Islamic conquest of India and has been described in several semi-legendary accounts. The Prithviraj Smarak you see today is a reminder of his heroic tale, a memorial that depicts him as an epitome of courage and patriotism!
