Rediscover spirituality in one of India’s holiest shrines

India is home to numerous spiritual jewels where the boundaries of faith blur, and the universal language of love and peace prevails. Ajmer Sharif Dargah proudly stands as one of them.

Located in the heart of the enchanting city of Ajmer, Rajasthan, the revered shrine is a beacon of spiritual harmony and a living testament to India's rich cultural landscape. Dedicated to the Sufi saint Khwaja Moinuddin Chishti, it beckons devotees and travellers from across the globe to experience its mystical aura and timeless beauty.

Embracing the Sufi saint's secular teachings, the shrine's doors are open to people of all faiths and religions. This inclusive spirit makes it one of India's most popular holy places, attracting hundreds of thousands of pilgrims, regardless of caste, creed, or religion, seeking the saint's blessings. It is believed that if you ask for a wish with a pure heart at this shrine, it will be fulfilled.

Let’s embark on a virtual journey into this spiritual gem of India.

A saint and his dream

Khwaja Moinuddin Chishti (also spelt as Khwaja Moin-ud-din Chisti) believed himself to be a direct descendant of Prophet Muhammad. Guided by a dream, he travelled from Persia to India, eventually settling in Ajmer in 1192. There, he dedicated his life to preaching love, compassion, and tolerance until his passing in 1236. Renowned as ‘Gareeb Nawaz’ or ‘Benefactor of the Poor,’ Khwaja Moinuddin Chishti was celebrated for his generosity and kindness towards the less fortunate. To honour his legacy, Mughal Emperor Humayun built the Ajmer Sharif Dargah, a shrine that continues to attract pilgrims from all walks of life.

An exquisite display of architectural prowess

Immerse yourself in a spectacular display of artistry resonating with the Mughal Era. Nestled between the hustle and bustle of the city, this Dargah transports you to another realm. As you approach the Dargah, prepare to be captivated by its magnificent white marble domes gleaming against the azure sky. A peaceful aura engulfs you as you enter through its large silver doors decorated with intricate carvings. The air is thick with the sweet scent of rose petals and incense, creating an atmosphere that instantly calms the soul. Prepare to be amazed by the larger-than-life Buland Darwaza, which opens to the second courtyard and acts as the main entrance to the Dargah. Behold the magnificent, gold-plated, marble tomb of Khwaja Moinuddin Chishti that holds the power to mesmerise anyone who lays their eyes on it—befittingly surrounded by a marble screen and railing made of silver. The tomb, draped in vibrant chadars (silk sheets), serves as the spiritual epicentre of the dargah.

Once you are done admiring the fine craftsmanship, you will also be drawn to the sheer architectural genius. The Dargah comprises various buildings, including tombs, courtyards, and Dalaans like the Nizam Gate, Jama Masjid, Aulia Masjid, Dargah Shrine, and Mehfil Khana. Each of these structures encapsulates spirituality and history within its revered walls. The soulful experience created by the Mehfil-e-Sama and other evening rituals, combined with the spectacular structures, will forever remain etched in your memory.

United in love, united in spirit

At Ajmer Sharif, humanity precedes religion, drawing millions of pilgrims to experience a shared sense of love, peace, compassion, and spirituality. This revered site is not only a place of worship but also a centre for the study of Sufi teachings, attracting scholars and students from around the world.

During festive occasions, the inner courtyard of the Dargah comes alive with vibrant celebrations. Qawwali (the devotional music of the Sufis) performances fill the air with timeless melodies, creating a divine atmosphere. One of the unique attractions is the giant cauldrons used to prepare a special version of Kheer, a beloved dessert. The 37 ft wide and 15 ft deep 'Bade Deg' (big cauldron), gifted by Mughal Emperor Akbar, has a capacity of 4,480 kgs and is ingeniously crafted so that its rim never gets hot during cooking. This massive cauldron is reserved for special occasions when the number of devotees is exceptionally high.

On most days, the 'Chote Deg' (small cauldron) with a capacity of 2,240 kgs, gifted by Akbar's son Jehangir, is used. Regardless of which cauldron is in use, the Kheer is considered a blessing from the Saint. People of various faiths come together to share this sacred dessert, embodying the unity and inclusivity that is the core essence of Ajmer Sharif. Legend has it that putting money into the 'Badi Deg' can make one's heartfelt wishes come true.
