A saint and his dream
Khwaja Moinuddin Chishti (also spelt as Khwaja Moin-ud-din Chisti) believed himself to be a direct descendant of Prophet Muhammad. Guided by a dream, he travelled from Persia to India, eventually settling in Ajmer in 1192. There, he dedicated his life to preaching love, compassion, and tolerance until his passing in 1236. Renowned as ‘Gareeb Nawaz’ or ‘Benefactor of the Poor,’ Khwaja Moinuddin Chishti was celebrated for his generosity and kindness towards the less fortunate. To honour his legacy, Mughal Emperor Humayun built the Ajmer Sharif Dargah, a shrine that continues to attract pilgrims from all walks of life.
