Patiala’s birth: A story of valour

The early origins of the state's founders, known as the Phulkian Dynasty, are shrouded in myth and mystery. The state emerged in the 18th century, during a period of political change following the decline of the Mughal Empire. The region was marked by the rise of Sikh Misaldars, who established independent states in Punjab.

The state grew under Maharaja Ala Singh's successors, reaching from the Shivaliks in the north to Rajasthan in the south. Despite facing challenges from the Mughals, Afghans, and Marathas, Ala Singh showed great courage and skill, establishing and maintaining the state that eventually became Patiala. In 1763, he laid the foundation of the Patiala Fort, known as Qila Mubarak, around which the city developed.
