Welcome to a princely paradise

Embark on a journey through time and immerse yourself in the grandeur of Patiala, one of Punjab's most historic districts. With its 300-year-old legacy, the city is a living testament to royal glory and cultural opulence. It is the city where Sikhism flourished and battles etched their mark over four decades, offering a thrilling adventure for history enthusiasts.

Patiala, once a princely state, has evolved into a cultural melting pot where Rajput, Mughal, and Punjabi influences blend harmoniously. The city’s art, architecture, and streets narrate the fascinating tale of the Maharajas who once reigned here. Known as the ‘City of Palaces, Forts, and Gardens,’ Patiala still retains its old-world charm.

Founded by Baba Ala Singh, the visionary who established the Phulkian State, Patiala's name itself echoes its royal lineage. Originally known as ‘Pati Ala’, meaning ‘the land of Baba Ala Singh,’ it gradually transformed into the majestic Patiala we know today.

Patiala's magic extends beyond its royal past. The city is a haven for art lovers, boasting its own distinct Gharana style of music. Food lovers will delight in the region's renowned culinary traditions, while those with a keen eye for detail will be captivated by the exquisite Patialvi craftwork.  Gota, Kinari, Zari, and Sitara – these intricate embroidery techniques come together to create breath-taking waist cords and Parandas (hair-tying cords) that are not just admired, but celebrated worldwide, a testament to Patiala's cultural contributions.

Patiala’s birth: A story of valour

The early origins of the state's founders, known as the Phulkian Dynasty, are shrouded in myth and mystery. The state emerged in the 18th century, during a period of political change following the decline of the Mughal Empire. The region was marked by the rise of Sikh Misaldars, who established independent states in Punjab.

The state grew under Maharaja Ala Singh's successors, reaching from the Shivaliks in the north to Rajasthan in the south. Despite facing challenges from the Mughals, Afghans, and Marathas, Ala Singh showed great courage and skill, establishing and maintaining the state that eventually became Patiala. In 1763, he laid the foundation of the Patiala Fort, known as Qila Mubarak, around which the city developed. Qila Mubarak is an iconic fortress of Patiala, as walking through its interior structures will not only provide you with a rare glimpse into Sikh palace architecture but also showcase a composite of several architectural styles, reflecting tastes and visions through the different eras.

Witness the majestic foundations of Patiala

Get ready to witness a myriad of historic sites telling tales of Patiala's rich history. Behold the grandeur of Patiala’s Bahadurgarh Fort, a structure considered impenetrable in its time due to its 25-foot-deep moat. As you explore the city, you will encounter many magnificent structures, including the Sheesh Mahal (palace of mirrors). The interiors of this palace are adorned with intricately designed miniatures in the Kangra style portraying Geet Govind. This incredible poetic work by Jaidev is dedicated to the love between Lord Krishna and Radha.

If you are a discerning music lover, then the Patiala Gharana of Music will surely be a feast for your ears. Patiala Gharana (school or style of music) of Hindustani classical music is known for its unique style. This royal tradition emphasises rhythmic complexity, using Ek (one) and Teen (three) taals (beats) and pentatonic ragas, and its signature taans—highly rhythmic, energetic vocal techniques that originate from the navel, not the throat.

Notable musicians like Bade Ghulam Ali Khan and Ghulam Ali have emerged from this gharana, shaping its legacy. You can experience the magic of the Patiala Gharana of music at the Patiala Heritage Festival, which is conducted primarily at the Qila Mubarak in February every year.
