A global haven for biodiversity and conservation

The Kanjli wetland, which spans an extensive area of 490 hectares, is situated upstream of the Harike Wetland within the Beas River basin. This engineered wetland site has been recognised worldwide as a designated Ramsar Convention site since 2002. The conference mentioned above has classified Kanjli Lake among the handful of wetlands that possess global significance.

The Kanjli Lake constitutes an essential component of the larger Kanjli wetland system, situated in the Kapurthala district of Punjab. The commissioning of this lake in 1870 was done with the primary objective of facilitating irrigation to the surrounding areas by constructing headworks across the Kali Bien rivulet - a tributary of the perennial Beas River. It falls under the administrative boundary of Kapurthala District of Punjab and is located in the Kanjli village, around 4 km from Kapurthala. The surface area of this lake spans 184 hectares. It sustains a rich assortment of biotic communities and harbours various plant and animal species.

A serene haven of nature's wonders

The Kanjli Wetland in Kapurthala is a nature lover's paradise, boasting a stunning array of plant and animal life. As you stroll through this lush oasis, you'll be enchanted by the diverse trees, shrubs, and aquatic plants that paint the landscape in vibrant hues. The air is filled with the sweet scent of aromatic plants, creating a truly immersive natural experience. Wildlife enthusiasts will be thrilled by the chance to spot various mammals, reptiles, and fish that call this wetland home. But the real stars of the show are the birds - with around 50 species of migratory birds flocking here in winter, it's a birdwatcher's dream come true!

Where a wholesome experience awaits

If you seek a peaceful retreat from the hustle and bustle of daily life, Kanjli Wetland offers a tranquil sanctuary where you can immerse yourself in nature's embrace. As you wander along the wetland's trails, the gentle rustle of leaves and the melodious songs of birds create a soothing symphony that melts away stress. Find a quiet spot by the lake to practice meditation or simply sit in contemplation, allowing the calm waters to reflect your inner peace. The golden hues of sunset paint the sky, creating a magical ambiance perfect for photography enthusiasts.

The picturesque lake at the heart of the wetland is ideal for a leisurely boat ride, allowing you to soak in the serene beauty of your surroundings. Fishing enthusiasts can try their luck at catching some of the local fish species, adding an exciting element to their visit.

As you explore, keep your eyes peeled for the diverse bird life - you might spot graceful shovellers, vibrant mallards, or majestic geese gliding across the water. Whether you're an early riser eager to catch the misty dawn or a night owl captivated by stargazing, Kanjli Wetland provides a serene backdrop for connecting with nature and finding your inner balance.
