A secular journey into spiritual bliss

The Shiva Temple, located in Gur Mandi in Jalandhar, is a venerated Hindu temple. What separates this temple from the others is the fact that it was founded by a Muslim ruler, the Nawab of Sultanpur Lodhi in the 16th century who built this temple near the mosque of Imam Nasar.

According to local legend, the Nawab who governed the region became infatuated with a married Hindu woman. Despite her refusal and to her aid, she was rescued from the Nawab's pursuit by a serpent, which she believed was sent by Lord Shiva. Deeply devoted to Lord Shiva, she saw the serpent's intervention as a divine sign. Overcome with remorse, the Nawab resolved to construct a temple dedicated to Lord Shiva, honouring the woman's unwavering devotion.

In modern times, the Shiva Temple is a beacon of spirituality and cultural heritage, drawing devotees from far and wide. Its historical significance and architectural splendour serve as a reminder of Jalandhar's enduring connection to its past, making it a revered landmark in the city's cultural landscape.

Wonder at the unusual architecture

The temple is a blend of Hindu and Muslim architecture, with the front gate of this temple resembling the gate of a mosque, the other parts reflect the Hindu architectural style of a temple. The shrines feature white and red etched pyramid-shaped shikharas. The presiding deity is Lord Shiva and the image of the serpent is also worshipped.

Witness the spiritual fervour at its peak

Experience the grandeur of the Maha Shivratri celebration, an event filled with devotion, joy, and spiritual awakening that leaves an indelible mark on your soul. During this auspicious festival, devotees flock to the temple to offer prayers, perform ritual fasts, and partake in the vibrant night-long festivities, including traditional dances, soul-stirring music, and dramatic re-enactments of Lord Shiva's legends.
