Where Hindus pray to the Supreme Goddess

In the vibrant city of Amritsar, a prominent center of Sikhism, lies the majestic Durgiana Temple, devoted to Goddess Durga. It is known for its architectural magnificence, which draws parallels with the iconic Golden Temple. In fact, you won't be able to tell the difference at all.

Also known as Sitla Mandir, its origins go back to the 16th century, though its present form emerged from a meticulous reconstruction effort in the early 20th century.

Come in for a transcendental experience as the temple welcomes pilgrims and visitors with open arms. It is especially beautiful during Navratri, Dussehra, Diwali, Janmashtami, Rama Navami, and Holi.

Architecture that will astound you

Rebuilt in 1921 under the visionary guidance of Guru Harsai Mal Kapoor, a descendant of the esteemed lineage of Prithi Chand and Guru Ram Das, Durgiana Temple is an epitome of architectural brilliance.

Just look at the majestic domes crowning the main temple! Adorned with gleaming gold carvings, the temple casts a radiant glow that beckons worshippers from afar. Amidst the tranquil waters of a sacred lake (sarovar), just like the Golden Temple, Durgiana stands as a beacon of light. Spanning 160 metres by 130 metres, the serene expanse of the lake forms a peaceful backdrop. And there is a bridge that will provide you with access to the temple's sanctum.

As you approach the entrance, you are greeted by the magnificent Darshni Deori, a monumental silver door standing 12x12 feet. Each door within the temple is a testament to this sacred space's grandeur.

Stepping into the central sanctum, the Garbh Grah, one is enveloped by an aura of sublime divinity. Here, amidst the glorious surroundings, stand the revered idols of Shri Lakshmi-Narayan in a dignified standing posture. Flanking them are the divine manifestations of Shri Ram Darbar and the enchanting idols of Shri Radha-Krishna along with Shri Giriraj Maharaj. Together, they form a captivating tableau of divine grace and beauty.

Steeped in legends

Legend has it that Lord Rama graced this sacred ground during the Ashwamedha Yagya. The tree within the courtyard is where Luv and Kush, sons of Lord Ram and Ma Sita, bound his horse after capturing it. It is also believed that King Ishvaku, the Sun God's grandson, performed many sacrificial rituals in this land.

Beyond the temple

The Golden Temple can be reached in minutes from Durgiana Temple. Historical landmarks like Jallianwala Bagh and the Partition Museum are also in the vicinity.

And don't forget to stroll the market for souvenirs ranging from religious items, handicrafts, and traditional clothing!
