Flora and fauna
The Balukhand-Konark Sanctuary is renowned for its rich biodiversity, harbouring a wide array of plant and animal species adapted to its diverse habitats. The sanctuary is characterised by its dense coastal forests, which are dominated by indigenous tree species such as casuarinas, cashew and acacias. These forests provide vital habitat for a variety of wildlife, including spotted deer, wild boar, jungle cats and various species of birds, reptiles and amphibians. Birdwatchers flock to the sanctuary to catch glimpses of resident and migratory birds such as egrets, herons, kingfishers and raptors.
Coastal dunes and beaches
One of the highlights of the Balukhand-Konark Sanctuary is its pristine coastline, which stretches for several kilometres along the Bay of Bengal. The sanctuary is home to extensive sand dunes, coastal marshes, and mangrove forests, which serve as important breeding and nesting grounds for marine life and migratory birds. Visitors can explore the sandy beaches of Ramachandi, Chandrabhaga, and Konark, where they can sunbathe, swim, and witness stunning sunrises and sunsets over the ocean.
