A history of conquests and freedom
Imagine ancient footsteps echoing through lush forests, and you’ll find traces of Deomali in the writings of the 7th-century Chinese traveller Hiuen Tsang. Deomali was conquered by different dynasties through the centuries, including the Chalukya, Chola and Gajapati dynasties.
These different rulers contributed to the growth of Deomali, building temples and palaces. Later on, it became the site for a number of battles between the British and Indian freedom fighters.
