The living lake

Covering an expansive area of over 1,100 square kilometers, Asia’s largest brackish water lake is a treasure trove of biodiversity and facilitates a thriving ecosystem of fauna. Fed by 52 rivers and rivulets, Chilika Lake is a natural wonder and a haven for birdwatchers.

Enchanting fauna

A survey of the fauna at Chilika recorded over 800 species in and around the lagoon. The list includes a number of rare, threatened and endangered species including the Barakudia limbless skink.

Migratory birds

The largest wintering ground for migratory birds on the Indian subcontinent, these feathered visitors arrive in flocks, creating a mesmerizing spectacle. From Siberian cranes to flamingos, the lake echoes with their calls.
