A poignant reminder of the ultimate sacrifice

In the heart of Kohima, the beautiful capital city of Nagaland, lies a solemn place that echoes with courage, sacrifice and the indomitable human spirit.

Step into the Kohima War Cemetery, a poignant reminder and a significant place in history that commemorates the Battle of Kohima. The history behind this sacred ground is as compelling as it is heartbreaking. In the spring of 1944, during the Battle of Kohima, Allied forces clashed with the Japanese in a desperate struggle to halt their advance into India. The battle raged for over two months which turned Kohima into a battleground. The Kohima War Cemetery was established to honour the soldiers who made the ultimate sacrifice in this pivotal conflict, ensuring that their memory would never fade away.

The final resting place

As you enter the cemetery, the lush greenery envelopes you with a sense of tranquillity. The cemetery is perched on Garrison Hill, overlooking the city of Kohima, and provides a panoramic view of the surrounding hills and valleys.

But amidst the solemnity, there is also beauty to be found. The cemetery, beautifully designed by Colin St. Claire Oakes, holds a special place of honour for 1,420 Commonwealth burials from the Second World War and one non-war burial.

As you enter, take a moment to admire the memorial to the 2nd Division, bearing the heartfelt inscription: ""When you go home, Tell them of us and say, For your tomorrow, We gave our today."" The cemetery also features a touching memorial to the 2nd Battalion, the Dorsetshire Regiment, and various other regimental memorials that have been erected on and near Garrison Hill, creating a space for peaceful reflection and remembrance.

At the highest point in the cemetery, you'll find the Kohima Cremation Memorial, which commemorates 917 Hindu and Sikh soldiers whose remains were cremated in accordance with their faith.
