Welcome to the Nagaland State Museum in Bayavu Hill, Kohima! Step inside, and get transported into a world where ancient artefacts, tribal art, and traditional clothing come together to tell the story of Nagaland's past.

It's one of the two museums maintained by the Directorate of Art and Culture, Nagaland, and has been open to the public since 1970.

Within its walls, an array of artefacts awaits, offering a captivating glimpse into the life of the tribes that call Nagaland home. From intricate architectural patterns to elaborate apparel, the museum's exhibits vividly depict Naga life, showcasing its social customs, hierarchy, and artistic prowess.

A cornucopia of cultural wealth

When you visit the Nagaland State Museum, you'll be stepping into a treasure trove of Naga identity, encompassing the rich heritage of 16 tribes. Take a leisurely stroll through the museum and be amazed by the diverse collection of artefacts on display. From clan motifs, necklaces, and precious stones to traditional costumes and inscriptions, there's so much to explore.

The museum also features the Morung (traditional Naga hut), presented as hut models that highlight the unique architectural styles of the different tribes. You'll also find a captivating exhibition of musical instruments crafted from bamboo and buffalo horns.

And for all you art lovers out there, don't miss the art gallery, where you can admire stunning paintings created by local artists. Other notable exhibits include a Zelian lady performing the Butterfly Dance, representing the tribe's rich dance tradition, and a diorama depicting an Angami couple visiting relatives during the Sekrenyi festival, which marks the beginning of the lunar year and includes ceremonial feasts and gift-giving.
