Crafting a cultural legacy

Nothing showcases the identity and culture of a people more evocatively than its handicrafts – a physical manifestation of skills, natural bounty, traditions and a sense of history. Nowhere will you find this more gloriously showcased than at the Diezephe Craft Village.

At the Diezephe village, a 500-strong community of skilled artisans and weavers, the art of handloom weaving and creating handicrafts is a way of life. The village exudes a vibrant heritage even as it proudly displays craft showrooms, weaving workshops, and a captivating craft museum.

Weaving a sustainable haven

Located 13 kms from Dimapur, the village was the outcome of the sustained efforts of the Government of Nagaland and various NGOs to create sustainable livelihoods through skill development and entrepreneurship, whilst preserving the cultural heritage. The Nagaland Handloom and Handicrafts Development Corporation Limited has been at the forefront of promoting the village, ensuring an immersive experience in local culture for all visitors. Little wonder that the Village was recognised and awarded as the bronze recipient, Best Tourism Village 2023.

Timeless traditions

Long before sustainable and ethical tourism became buzzwords, the Diezephe Craft Village had seamlessly inducted practices and processes that fostered its commitment to the environment.

From a policy of planting 10 trees per household annually as a means of preserving their natural resources, using natural dyes, documenting textiles to facilitating direct engagements between tourists and artisans, the Village caters to tourism that is centered around supporting local economies and sustainable practices.

Authenticity and integrity of craftsmanship come to the fore as tourists watch artisans create their craft, and learn about the traditional techniques that have been passed down through generations. In addition, visitors can try their hand at weaving, pottery, and wood carving under the guidance of local experts.

Today, the exceptional work of the artisans has found place across various social platforms, enabling them individually and the village collectively, to reap the benefits of increased local and global tourist visits and interest.

There’s more to the Village

Besides exploring and purchasing locally crafted handicrafts and handloom products, tourists can witness traditional paddy cultivation, experience the rural village lifestyle or even take a stroll through the zoological park.
