The blue mountain magic
Established in 1992, Phawngpui Blue Mountain National Park is located about 300 km from Aizawl, in the Saiha district of Mizoram. The park’s unique name is derived from the highest peak in the state, Phawngpui Peak, which stands at an impressive height of 2157 m. The mountain’s thin layer of clouds gives it a blue hue from a distance, adding to its allure and mystique.
Situated at an elevation of about 7000 feet, the park offers a pleasant climate year-round, with an average rainfall of 3000 mm. The park’s diverse ecosystems, including subtropical broadleaf and tropical evergreen forests, are home to a wide array of flora and fauna. From bamboo groves to therapeutic basil, the park is a treasure trove of natural wonders waiting to be explored.
Flora and fauna delights
The park covers an expansive area of about 50 sq km and is home to a diverse range of flora and fauna. The lush tropical forests house rare avian species like Blyth’s tragopan, Hume’s pheasant, and dark-rumped swift, along with mammals such as the Asiatic black bear, slow loris, stump-tailed macaque, tiger, goral, capped langur, and leopard. The valleys adorned with orchids and rhododendrons create a magical ambiance, perfect for capturing postcard-worthy moments.
