A sanctuary steeped in legend
The Khawnglung Mountain, near Pangzawl, about 160 kilometres from Aizawl, was once home to a village of the same name. Located on the ridge, the village bore witness to a chapter steeped in bloodshed, a series of feuds among the Sailo chiefs in the tumultuous midst of the nineteenth century.
Intertwined with this story is the legend of Chalkunga, a valiant soul who dared the depths of danger to rescue his beloved, Thanghniangi, a maiden caught amidst the chaos of raiders. He rescued her, but fate had a different plan, as the swelling waters of the Tiau River tore Thanghniangi from Chalkunga's desperate grasp and stole her away from him.
Intriguing legends or vibrant wildlife, this wildlife sanctuary is a love letter to nature enthusiasts worldwide.
