Where poetry takes flight

Mizo Hlakungpui Mual stands as a cherished tribute to the Mizo poets. Situated about 265 kilometres away from Aizawl, this extraordinary endeavour took root on the outskirts of Khawbung village in 1983. It was a heartfelt decision by the Executive Committee of Khawbung Branch YMA to honour two laureate poets in 1986. The site sees the emergence of monuments dedicated to Mizo laureate poets and writers at ten-year intervals.

These majestic megaliths, set against the backdrop of rolling hills, inspire awe and reverence. The name "Hlakungpui Mual," meaning "the place of inspiration" in Mizo, perfectly captures the spirit of this initiative. As time passed, the community decided to pay homage to the Mizo poets and writers who have significantly enriched Mizo literature. The Committee established strict selection criteria, requiring writers to have 3–4 published books and a lasting impact on Mizo literature, while poets with exceptionally valuable songs/poems would also be considered. However, inclusion in Hlakungpui Mual is reserved for writers and poets who have passed away for at least five years.

Orchid park and memoirs

Step into the Hlakungpui Mual, and prepare to be mesmerised by the love and appreciation the Mizos have for their poets. The air hums with quiet respect, broken only by the rustle of turning pages and the gentle murmur of appreciation. Monuments dedicated to Mizo laureates stand tall at intervals. Here, you’ll find stone inscriptions, verses etched in the pages of immortality. But the Hlakungpui Mual is more than just these relics. It has a scenic orchid park as well. You’ll discover a museum that unlocks the lives of these literary icons once you venture deeper. Here, personal belongings and manuscripts are displayed with reverence, which offers a glimpse into the creative process of these revered figures.
