The preserved species of big cats

The capital city of Mizoram, Aizawl is not only known for its famous handicrafts but also for the wildlife sanctuary and zoological parks they feature. The capital city, Aizawl has one zoological park and four wildlife sanctuaries that aim to preserve the endangered species of animals that are important to us and the environment.

One of the wildlife sanctuaries here in Aizawl is Dampa Tiger Reserve. The Dampa Tiger Reserve is located in the western part of Mizoram and spans over an area of 500 square kilometres which makes it Mizoram’s largest wildlife sanctuary. The Dampa Tiger Reserve is divided into two ranges including the Teirei range and the Phuldungsei range. This sanctuary was established in 1985 and was later declared a Tiger Reserve in 1994 and became a part of Project Tiger.

The Project Tiger is a wildlife conservation movement which was initiated in 1973. It was done to protect the endangered tiger and its habitats. The project aimed to protect the Bengal tiger while establishing dedicated tiger reserves for sustaining tiger populations. Due to various reasons, the tiger population had been declining thus, Project Tiger was established. The tiger had been poached for illegal wildlife trade, many had been lost in human-wildlife conflict and some died due to habitat loss and fragmentations.

Why preservation is necessary

Humans tend to forget sometimes, that while we are on the top of the food chain, it is only due to nature that we are so. They tend to become greedy, always claiming things that are not theirs. It is only because nature is benevolent that we are forgiven time and time again.

But what about the time Nature has enough and decides to take back all that we have? That would truly be devastating to experience. What if all the animals and plants have become extinct and nature is left desolate? We would all too perish with the plants and animals that we tried to devour because they were simply unable to protect themselves and because we were powerful enough to do so. It's necessary to remain educated about our roots and what Mother Nature has given us so that we can give back to the same Nature.

Flora and fauna both are important and play a crucial role in the health and functioning of the planet. They form an intricate food chain and web in which the extinction of one species can disrupt the pattern of others. Flora are the primary producers which means that they support other life forms and fauna on the other hand, including both carnivores and herbivores depend on the Flora to live.

Imagine if there is no longer grass due to overeating or any other reason, this would lead to the death of animals that depend on grass like cows, goats and zebra which would in turn lead to the death of carnivore animals that feed on them. It always comes back to a circle. Oxygen is essential for human survival, and as plant numbers decrease, so will the human population. Plants also absorb carbon dioxide, if they are no longer there to do so the global temperature would rise to an unimaginable degree, deemed suitable for non to live. Plants also prevent soil erosion by tightly bounding the top layer of soil with their roots, if not we would see cases of floods happening everywhere.

In scientific terms, flora and fauna help scientists in understanding the life process, evaluation and interdependence of life forms. Plants and animals also contribute to cultural identity because many plants and animals have spiritual significance for these communities. How Norway Truce otherwise known as the Christmas tree holds an important place in the heart of Christians.

Plants and animals are crucial for biodiversity which is essential for the ecosystem health, but in the depth of thought, we should all recognise the fact that every life on earth is worth respecting.

The fun in animal kingdom

The Dampa Wildlife Reserve is home to a wide variety of animals and plants. The animals here consist of a wide range including mammals, birds, reptiles, arthropods, amphibians, annelids, insects and fish. Additionally, the guided wildlife safari takes you around the grasslands and forests to observe the tigers, elephants, deer and many more.

To immerse yourself fully in the atmosphere of the animal kingdom, you can camp here in reserve for a night or two. The reserves streams and rivers hold many beautiful fish and if you want to try your hand at fishing, it is possible to do so here.

There's also a guided photography tour here if you wish to film all the plants and animals in their natural glory. Last but not least, you can also enjoy trekking along the scenic trails, which offer breathtaking views.
