A monument of devotion and faith
The Church was first established in the year 1846 by Welch Missionary Thomas Jones, who travelled to the Khasi village to preach the Christian faith. Thomas Jones devoted himself to learning the Khasi language and within eight months, he was able to effectively converse and preach the gospel in Khasi. His success earned him the title ‘Father of the Khasi Alphabets’ and ‘The Founder of Khasi Literature.’
It wasn’t until 8th March 1846, that U Amor and U Rujon accepted the Christian faith, marking this day as the beginning of the Presbyterian Faith in the Khasi region. The Presbyterian Faith Church traces its roots to the teaching of John Calvin, a French reformer. The beliefs and faith of the church revolve around the ideology of “The Holy Trinity”.
The original church unfortunately was destroyed in the Great Earthquake of 1897, but the unwavering spirits of its followers led to its rebuilding in 1898, marking the present church’s 52nd year. Over the past century, the community has significantly increased. Beginning with only 5 followers, its influence steadily spread from the Khasi hills to Manwai to Jowai to Shillong. Today the Nongsawlia Presbyterian Church boats more than 5 lakh followers from the Khasi-Jaintia hills.
Standing as a testament of strength, the church has prevailed against the tests of time, and overcome challenges. You will experience history, as the century-old prayers ring through the walls of the church, fostering a strong emotional connection with religious belief. The Church is a symbol of Hope and Resilience, representing the strong faith and devotion of the community.
A fusion of culture and belief
The Nongsawlia Presbyterian Church symbolised a harmonious fusion between the indigenous Khasi heritage and Christian Faith, promoting peace between the two realms. In addition to his missionary work, Thomas Jones established a school near the church, fostering educational awareness among the Khasi tribe and supporting their culture. This Educational institution played a major role in the social advancements in the Khasi region, representing the church’s impact beyond religious belief.
The rebuilding of the church after its destruction serves as a symbol of the community’s cultural belief and resilience. Members of the Khasi community have developed a strong emotional bond with the Nongsawlia Presbyterian Church. Seeking solace and spirituality within its serene and holy atmosphere, individuals share a collective emotional experience during the celebrations, festivities, baptism and funerals, creating a strong bond between followers and the church. As a constant reminder of the cultural beliefs and heritage, the church calls for visitors to step into the church, witness the past, learn the history and feel the deep cultural significance embedded within the walls of the sacred church.
