The Legends of Sagol Kangei
Mapal Kangjeibung's mystique is shrouded in captivating tales of its longstanding origins and legendary matches. In the historic Meitei manuscript "Kangjeibung" translates to a ground or field used to play sports. Polo, locally known as Sagol Kangei, first came into Manipur during King Kangba's rule. The script also bears records of the first Polo match ever recorded, held in 33 AD between Nongda Lairen Pakhangba's royal companions.
An extraordinary tale unfolded under King Charairongba in 1697 A.D. An underdog team of just ten players led by him emerged victorious over an opposing team of one hundred players despite all odds, creating an astonishing tale of triumph against all odds.
