Remembering the martyrs
On March 24th 1891, the echoes of injustice reverberated through Manipur as the British fired the first bullet of war without provocation. In the ensuing days of strife in Manipur's capital, courageous souls like Pukhramba Tanka, Khumbong Subedar, Leisang Jamadar, and Athokpa Dewan valiantly gave their lives, alongside two Tangkhul warriors in fierce hand-to-hand combat. Lt. Brackenbary and British sepoys also fell in the heat of battle. Yet, amidst the chaos, a surprising act of compassion emerged when the Manipuris released 51 Indian sepoys in the British army, providing them with funds for their journey home.
Despite Manipur's resistance, the British, bolstered by reinforcements from Kohima, Tamu, and Silchar, pressed on with their onslaught. The Battle of Khongjom emerged as the pinnacle of this struggle for freedom, where heroes like Major Paona Brajabasi, Chinglen Sana, Khumbong Major, Loitongba Jamadar, Keisa Jamadar, and Heirang Khongja laid down their lives, etching their names into the annals of history as symbols of unwavering courage and sacrifice.
Every year on April 23rd, Manipur remembers the brave martyrs who redefined courage and bravery against the British government.
