History in every corner

With a legacy of war, dynasties and commerce, Pune is a city steeped in history and culture from several bygone eras. It was ruled at different times by different rulers but is most famously remembered as the citadel of the Peshwas, the Prime Ministers of the Maratha dynasty, in the 18th century. Amidst the hustle and bustle of the older Pune districts, there stands the majestic Vishambaug Wada (wada meaning palace or fortress in Marathi).

Once the esteemed abode of Peshwa Baji Rao II, the final ruler of the Maratha Empire in the early 1800s, Vishrambaug Wada was built in 1810. Baji Rao II chose this opulent dwelling over the nearby Shaniwar Wada, the primary stronghold of the Peshwas, living here for eleven years.

A marvel of art and architecture

Vishrambaug Wada was built In 1811 by Peshwa Baji Rao II, a stirring three-storeyed mansion that still resonates with the weight of its historical narrative. At the intersection where Bajirao Road meets Laxmi Road, this wada stands as a beacon of architectural brilliance.

The entrance, adorned with teak-wood pillars, stands resolute, showcasing the power of the Peshwas from the first glance. The majestic columns and ceilings whisper tales of a glorious past under Bajirao's reign.

The first floor reveals a grand hall, adorned with intricately carved ceilings and bathed in the glow of majestic chandeliers. The teak balcony, once alive with Bajirao's musicians, now stands silent, a poignant reminder of bygone melodies.

Today the Wada is home to several offices, a post office and serves as a venue for cultural activities. It also houses a museum that displays artifacts from the Peshwa era.

Exploring beyond the Wada

Like Vishrambaug Wada, several other monuments across Pune bring out the historic splendour of the city flamboyantly.
