The artistic finesse of buddhist history

Amidst the rustic charm of Kamshet in the Maval taluk of Pune lie the ancient Bedse Caves, popularly known as Bedsa Caves. These timeless sanctuaries, a mere 26 km from Lonavala Railway Station, beckon travellers from far and wide, whispering tales of a bygone era. History and historians trace the history of these rustic mountain-carved rock caves back to the 1st century during the Satavahana period. With Lohagad Fort standing guard at 20 km and Pune 56 km away, these caves are silent sentinels of history. The real test is every one of the 400 steps you need to climb before you reach the Bedsa Caves.

Dating back a staggering 2300 years, these Buddhist marvels hold the secrets of Maharashtra's ancient past, drawing pilgrims and history enthusiasts alike. Alongside the Karla Caves and Bhaja Caves, they form a sacred trio woven into the fabric of Lonavala's rich heritage.

The Chaitya (Cave 7) cradles within its walls a magnificent stupa, a testament to the devotion of those who came before us. Its grandeur is echoed in the towering pillars, adorned with intricate carvings of elephants, horses, and bulls, each telling its own story.

Adjacent lies the Vihara (Cave 11), a serene monastery housing nine cells and more, offering solace to weary travellers seeking refuge from the world outside. As the first light of dawn kisses the horizon, the caves come alive, bathed in a golden glow that accentuates the beauty of every carving, every crevice.

In memory of the kalinga war

The Bedsa Caves have a world of history within each wall, every cave. During Emperor Ashoka's reign, amidst the expansion of the Satavahana dynasty across Deccan, Andhra, and the Western coast of India, the sacred Bedse Caves emerged. During the aftermath of the Kalinga War, Ashoka's heart underwent a profound transformation. Overwhelmed with sorrow and regret, he renounced violence, vowing never to wield weapons again. Seeking redemption, Ashoka embraced Buddhism, dedicating himself to peace and compassion.

Beyond the bedsa caves

The Karla Caves and Bhaje Caves can be found approximately 15 kilometres outside Lonavala on the way to Pune. Both caves boast amazing examples of Buddhist temple architecture carved into sheer rock faces, making for an impressive experience! Lonavala, an idyllic hill station near Pune in western India, features archaeological sites, picturesque picnic spots and breathtaking vistas. Don't forget to taste their world-famous Chikki brittle made with peanuts, dry fruits, sesame seeds and jaggery! Lonavala has earned itself the moniker "Lake District" due to its vast number of artificial lakes. Tungarli Lake, just outside of town, is an extraordinary sight during monsoon season when the water remains clear and deep until December or January. As you stroll along the entrance verandah, four magnificently carved columns depicting animals and dancing figures will greet you with grace and beauty.

The Bedsa Caves await you, promising rich cultural heritage, architectural marvels, and nature's stunning beauty in one trip.
