Lord Ram’s abode during 14 years in exile
Welcome to Nashik, a city steeped in mythology, and renowned for hosting the Kumbh Mela, the largest spiritual gathering on earth, every 12 years.
Nashik has great religious significance. It is believed to be the abode of Lord Ram, his wife, Goddess Sita and brother Lord Lakshman during their 14-year exile, as described in the Hindu epic Ramayana. The name ‘Nashik’ itself is said to originate from the legend that Lord Lakshman, cut the nose of ‘Surpanakha’ at this place. Surrounded by serene hills, lakes and lush green forests, Nashik is situated on the banks of the holy Godavari River and is home to several notable Hindu shrines. It is considered to be one of the holiest places for Hindus worldwide.
Experience the allure of this ancient site, known as Panchvati during the period of Ramayana. Panchvati is situated on the left banks of sacred river Godavari in Nashik city. The name ‘Panchvati’ is derived from the words Panch which means five and Vati which means banyan tree. There are some very old and lofty banyan trees close to Kalaram temple in Nashik, which are believed to have sprung from five banyans which gave Panchvati its name. This is where Sita Gufa or Sita’s Cave is situated.
