Mangoes by the lake

Located near the southwest border of Nagpur in Maharashtra, Ambazari Lake is the oldest, largest and one of the eleven lakes adorning the city. Created in 1870 under the rule of the Bhonsle dynasty, it was originally designed to supply water to Nagpur through clay pipes to government officials and notable citizens. This lake is also the source of the Nag River, a vital waterway for the region. Surrounded by mango trees, it rightfully earns its name 'Ambazari', where 'Amba' means 'mango' in Marathi.

Ambazari Lake and Garden stand out as a testament to Nagpur’s commitment to preserving its natural and historical heritage while offering a peaceful escape from urban life. It remains a favourite destination for both locals and tourists, providing a perfect blend of leisure, beauty, and historical intrigue.

Quenching Nagpur’s thirst

Ambazari Lake served as a primary water source for the city for over 30 years, reflecting its critical role in Nagpur’s development. Its enduring presence is a testament to the historical and functional significance that has transitioned over time into a valued recreational and ecological asset managed by the Nagpur Municipal Corporation.

The charm of Ambazari

Ambazari Lake and Garden are synonymous with serenity and scenic beauty. The expansive lake is complemented by the lush Ambazari Garden, established in 1958 and covering 18 acres. Although the musical fountain and various electric rides have been discontinued, the garden remains a beloved spot for morning walkers and an afternoon retreat for couples. It's a place where soothing music from radio speakers blends with the natural ambiance, and a green gym encourages fitness enthusiasts.
