Honouring the divine female deities
The Mahalakshmi Temple is dedicated to Goddess Mahalakshmi, the divine consort of Lord Vishnu, who is revered as the bestower of wealth, prosperity, and auspiciousness. Alongside Mahalakshmi, the temple also enshrines idols of Goddess Saraswati, the deity of knowledge and wisdom, and Goddess Kali, symbolizing power and protection.
History and legends
Steeped in rich history, the Mahalakshmi Temple traces its origins back to the 18th century. According to legend, devotees submerged three idols of the Goddesses, Shri Mahalakshmi, Shri Mahakali, and Shri Mahasaraswati, into the sea near Worli Creek to protect them from destruction by invaders. A project was undertaken by Shri Ramji Shivji Prabhu, a government engineer, to connect the two islands of Worli-Malabar Hill Creek. Despite efforts by Prabhu and his team, they faced challenges due to sea waves preventing the construction of pathways between the islands. However, one night, Goddess Mahalakshmi appeared in Prabhu's dream and instructed him to retrieve the idols from the Worli Creek and place them atop the hillock. Promising to fulfil the goddess's wishes, Prabhu and his team successfully retrieved the idols and connected the two creeks. In gratitude, Prabhu erected the Mahalakshmi Temple atop the hillock. Historical records indicate that the temple was built between 1761 A.D. and 1771 A.D.
Architecture and design
The architecture of the Mahalakshmi Temple reflects a harmonious blend of traditional Hindu temple design and contemporary aesthetics. The trust operates free medical dispensaries providing free checkups and medicines in the Mahalakshmi Temple precinct, including Allopathy, Ayurvedic, and Homeopathy services once a week. Additionally, it offers medical assistance donations to the poor, scholarships to underprivileged students of any religion, and relief to people affected by natural calamities.
