Legends and lore
According to legend, the Bhavani Temple in Mahabaleshwar has its roots in ancient mythology. Local folklore connects the temple to the legendary story of the Pandavas from the Hindu epic Mahabharata.
During their exile, the Pandavas and their wife Draupadi wandered the forests of the Western Ghats in search of refuge. Along the way, they faced numerous challenges and obstacles, including thirst and hunger.
In their hour of need, Draupadi sincerely prayed to Goddess Bhavani for divine intervention and blessings. Touched by her sincerity and devotion, Goddess Bhavani appeared before Draupadi and bestowed upon the Pandavas food, water, and protection. In gratitude for the goddess's kindness, the Pandavas decided to build a temple at the location where Draupadi had prayed. Thus, the Bhavani Temple was established as a symbol of faith, devotion, and divine grace.
Over the centuries, the temple has remained a sacred site for pilgrims, attracting devotees from all over the world who come to seek Goddess Bhavani's blessings. Even today, visitors are moved by the tale of Draupadi's devotion and the goddess's benevolent intervention, reinforcing the temple's significance in the eyes of believers.
