An architectural marvel beckoning royalty and heritage

Kolhapur's New Palace stands as an awe-inspiring testament to architectural brilliance and grandeur, dating back seven years from 1877-1884 and costing approximately seven lakh rupees to build. A visit to this regal masterpiece provides visitors with a thrilling journey into its grand halls while revelling in its timeless beauty.

The marvels within

As soon as you step inside the palace, your eyes are drawn towards the ground floor where lies the Shahaji Chhatrapati Museum - an exquisite collection of Kolhapur rulers' memorabilia that brings history alive with exquisite displays such as weaponry, costumes, embroidery work and jewellery from days gone by. Notable among its exhibits are silver elephant saddles that add grandeur to its display while an interactive photo gallery brings visitors deeper into Maharaja’s life by featuring captivating images. The museum also features Mahatma Gandhi and a letter from the British Viceroy and Governor General of India.

Reliving Maratha glory

At the core of the palace lies Darbar Hall, a grand testimony to Maratha history. Adorned with stained glass depictions from Shivaji's life and intricately-carved columns with temple-style brackets, it exudes royal splendour. An elevated throne completes its majestic atmosphere allowing visitors to marvel at past Maratha glories.

Timeless architecture and stories

The New Palace's architectural marvel can be seen in its black polished stone construction, which features an eight-angled design with a central tower and smaller towers spaced out along an eight-angled plan. Built in 1877, its clock tower stands tall at 85 feet, featuring one of India's largest mechanical clocks crafted in England.
