Kolhapur’s historic marvel

Situated within the bustling city of Kolhapur in Maharashtra lies the magnificent Bhavani Mandap; an embodiment of history and royal splendour. Once serving as the royal palace for Kolhapur Maharaja Chhatrapati Maharaja's durbar. Today this exquisite structure symbolises Kolhapur's glory and invites visitors to step back in time and discover its rich cultural history and legacy.

Bhavani Mandap's incredible appeal

Nestled within the walled city centre of Kolhapur, Bhavani Mandap holds immense historical significance. Situated adjacent to Mahalaxmi Temple, it serves as a sacred dwelling place for goddess Tulja Bhavani, considered Mahalaxmi's older sister. Bhavani Mandap was constructed between 1785 and 1800 under Shivaji II, who then ruled Kolhapur. For decades afterward, it served as an important gathering spot, housing offices of various court officials as well as hosting many celebrations and celebratory events. Reminiscent of British Raj architecture, its nostalgic charm harkens back to Kolhapur's glory days as an opulent princely state. Now serving as a collective tomb for Maratha royalty of Kolhapur and protecting their legacy.

Incredible stories

Legends abound at Bhavani Mandap, adding to its captivating charm. One such legend speaks of an alleged tunnel linking it with Panhala hillside fort located approximately 20 km away - purportedly constructed to serve as an escape route for Maratha soldiers during conflicts; however, its existence remains shrouded in mystery as there has been no concrete proof for such claims.
