The Jayakwadi Dam serves as the primary water source for the region, and the sanctuary was established to provide a safe haven for birds, maintaining their natural habitat for generations to come. It's home to a wide array of bird species, including majestic Indian vultures and colourful Indian rollers. During migratory seasons, visitors can witness the graceful northern pintail, the vibrant common teal, and even the great white pelican, among many others. The sanctuary's richness isn't limited to avian life, it also supports a diverse range of wildlife, from elusive jackals and hyenas to the elusive leopard.

What sets the Jayakwadi Bird Sanctuary apart is its abundance of water bodies, creating a perfect habitat for aquatic birds such as ducks, geese, and waders. But it's not just the aquatic life that thrives here; the sanctuary is also a haven for various raptor species, including majestic eagles, harriers, and kestrels.

The legendary story

Legend has it that this land was once ruled by a just and revered king whose kingdom was renowned for its lush green forests and abundant water sources. Interestingly, in the past, the sanctuary was favoured as a hunting ground by the Nizams of Hyderabad, renowned for their love of hunting. However, with the sanctuary's establishment, hunting was banned, and the area was protected to safeguard the region's flora and fauna.
