Unlocking the rich heritage of Maharashtra

Perched atop the rugged terrain north of the Deccan Plateau lies Gawilgadh, a formidable mountain stronghold steeped in the history of the Maratha Empire. Located near the Melghat Tiger Reserve in Maharashtra's Amravati District, this ancient fortress is believed to be over 300 years old. Within its walls, you can marvel at exquisitely carved idols dating back to the Nizam era, when Elichpur served as their capital. The intricate carvings depict a mesmerizing array of elephants, bulls, tigers, and lions, with scripts in Hindi, Urdu, and Arabic. Among the sacred figures, statues of Lord Hanuman and Lord Shankar stand as a testament to the fort's religious significance.

Constructed by the Gavlis, rulers of the shepherd community in the 12th and 13th centuries, Gawilgadh later fell under the control of the Gond community before passing into the hands of the Mughals. Today, the fort stands as a testament to its glorious past, with ten cannons made of iron, copper, and brass serving as reminders of its storied history.

Witness an impressive engineering marvel

Boasting striking architecture and spectacular engineering feats, the construction of Gawilgadh Fort was an engineering triumph. Locals believe that Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj had used the fort to monitor Mughal armies and protect his kingdom, using its three gates and two lakes as monitoring posts inscribed with exquisite Persian script. These features gave it great historical importance.

Due to this heritage site's significance, it has been designated by the Central Archaeological Survey of India as an esteemed heritage site. Gawilgadh Fort welcomes trekkers and adventurers with its breathtaking panoramic views from its summit and serves as a gateway to nearby attractions like Melghat Tiger Reserve and Chikhaldara Hill Station, offering you an opportunity to embrace nature while discovering local handicrafts and souvenirs.
