A sanctuary to uncover cosmic truths

Ujjain, one of the oldest cities in India and a revered centre of learning since antiquity, boasts a rich tapestry of cultural heritage. At the heart of this historic city lies the Vedshala, a celestial sanctuary where ancient astronomers gazed at the heavens in search of cosmic truths.

The Vedhshala, also known as the observatory, was constructed by Raja Jai Singh, the ruler of Amber (1614-1621). He is known for translating the works of Euclid and Ptolemy from Arabic to Sanskrit. The observatory was built to aid Hindu astrologers and scholars in their studies and research, specifically in compiling astronomical tables and predicting the movements of the sun, moon, and planets. It is one of five observatories built in India during the 18th century by the Raja, with the other four located in Delhi, Mathura, Jaipur, and Varanasi.

Instruments of meticulous designs

Vedshala is a testament to the architectural ingenuity of its creators. It comprises a series of astronomical instruments designed to track the movements of celestial bodies with astonishing accuracy. The original instruments, installed with the help of Raja Jai Singh, include a Sundial, Nadi Valay Yantra, Transit Instrument, Digyansa Yantra, and Shanku Yantra. There are plaques and notice boards all over the place carrying information in both Hindi and English to explain the workings of several instruments. The building also houses masonic instruments that are still being used to carry out research.

For ancient astronomers, Vedshala was more than just a scientific tool—it was a gateway to the heavens. Here, they observed the motions of the sun, moon, and stars, calculated celestial phenomena such as solstices and equinoxes, and charted the passage of time with unparalleled precision. Their discoveries not only enriched our understanding of the universe but also influenced the cultural and religious practices of the time.
