Discover the fascinating temple of Lord Rama

In the heart of Orchha, India, lies the enchanting Ram Raja Mandir, or Ram Raja Temple. The only temple in the country where Lord Rama is worshipped as a king and the only temple in India where the official guard of honour is given to the god. This sacred site holds immense significance in the region and exudes a serene and peaceful ambience that beckons devotees and tourists alike.

Ram Raja Mandir stands as a masterpiece of architectural brilliance, harmoniously blending Rajput and Mughal styles. Its multi-tiered structure adorned with domes, turrets, intricate carvings, and sculptures showcases the unmatched craftsmanship of the bygone era. The temple, also known as the Orchha Temple, is adorned with a vibrant palette of white, pink, and yellow hues. It stands proudly as one of Orchha's most splendid edifices, captivating all who lay eyes on it.

Witness the legacy of Raja Rama

Established by Madhukar Shah Bundela of Bundela kingdom in 16th century India, this temple stands as an eternally beloved tribute to Lord Rama that draws visitors from across the globe. Raja Madhukar Shah and Rani Ganesh Kunwari were devout followers of Lord Krishna and Lord Rama, respectively. According to local legend, on one particular occasion both decided to embark on pilgrimages together. The king desired to visit Mathura while his queen insisted upon visiting Ayodhya. A fierce debate ensued between them; neither could change each other's mind. Frustrated, the king became angry and ordered her out of the palace, travelling alone to Ayodhya and returning with her deity - otherwise Raja Mahal doors would remain closed to her until then.

The queen travelled to Ayodhya and fervently prayed there, yet after two to three months Lord Rama had not appeared. She considered suicide, leaping into the Saryu River; astonishingly, as soon as she did so he appeared before her, thanking her for her devotion and offering to accompany her under three conditions.

Travel from Ayodhya to Orchha could only take place via foot, and the best time would be during Pushya Nakshatra for 24 hours - therefore the Queen brought Lord Rama on this auspicious date.

Second, wherever Lord Rama dwelt he must be treated as a monarch. On arriving in Orchha, Raja Madhukar Shah generously relinquished his crown and led his coronation ceremony; henceforth this temple stands as the unique location where Lord Rama is worshipped as a sovereign ruler with full honour guard in place.

Finally, where Lord Rama first sat would become his temple. According to legend, Madhukar Shah began construction of the Chaturbhuj Temple for Lord Rama, yet when Queen Arundhati arrived the project remained incomplete, and she installed him into her kitchen instead as per Hindu tradition which holds that kitchens should be considered pure after being used as temples - thus becoming home for his Ram Raja Temple and giving Orchha its divine capital status.

The miraculous idol

Local legend tells of an extraordinary incident concerning the temple's idol of Lord Rama. Although originally intended for placement at Chaturbhuj Temple nearby, this miraculous object returned back home instead and led to the construction of its own temple for safekeeping.

Do not miss out on the evening aarti

A unique and notable tradition at this temple is the evening aarti, during which the guards pay homage to the deity with a gun salute, adding a distinctive touch to the worship ceremony. Following the aarti, Lord Rama is ceremoniously transported to another temple, from where Lord Hanuman is believed to have escorted him back to Ayodhya, reenacting a sacred journey steeped in mythology and devotion.

Furthermore, when distinguished guests visit the Ram Raja Temple, they are traditionally welcomed with paan (betel nut) and ittar (perfume), in contrast to the customary distribution of sweet prasad in most other temples. The Ram Raja Mandir takes centre stage during the annual Ram Vivah Festival in Orchha, typically celebrated in the Kartik month. This prestigious event draws thousands of devotees from across the country to partake in the festivities.
