Step into an architectural wonder

Situated in Orchha's historic centre lies the stunning Jahangir Mahal, an impressive symbol of India's cultural diversity and rich heritage. The construction of this palace was completed in the year 1598 by Bharath Bhushan after he defeated Vir Deo Singh. The purpose of Jahangir Mahal was to show the Bundela region's acquaintance with the Mughals. However, it is also believed that it was a part of regional rule's celebrations for Mughal Emperor Jahangir's visit. This fortified citadel and garrison offer you some incredible stories and memorable experiences.

As one of history's crowning achievements, Jahangir Mahal stands as an exquisite masterpiece of Mughal and Bundela architecture. When viewing its three-story edifice, you will be charmed by its elegant balconies, graceful porches, and luxurious halls. Every inch of this palace reeks of grandeur, offering a glimpse into the past glory of a bygone era. Climb down a narrow staircase to reach the main entrance facing east, called Hindola Dwar where two stone elephants with bells on their trunks guard this big entrance. The Palace is truly magnificent, composed of many courtyards and rooms which bear testament to its long and storied past. From its balconies and terraces, you can take in breathtaking views of nature's splendour as well as man-made masterpieces in the surrounding area.

An icon of cultural heritage

Jahangir Mahal stands as a timeless monument, epitomising cultural heritage and historical significance for Orchha. Today, it is managed by the State Archaeological Department. This palace continues to represent its grand past by drawing visitors from far and wide. Over time, conservation efforts have restored Jahangir Palace to its former glory. An incredible attraction right next to the palace is MPT Sheesh Mahal which charms you with its stunning suites and architecture. You can experience the royal Bundeli past by booking a suite or room here from the official website of MPT Hotels & Resorts.

Incredible tales echo throughout time

Jahangir Mahal's history echoes with extraordinary tales that continue to intrigue visitors today. According to legend, Jahangir, Akbar's son betrayed him and fled Agra for Allahabad (modern-day Prayagraj), where Abul Fazal, one of Akbar's trusted ministers pursued Jahangir relentlessly with the intent of killing him. Their path eventually took them through Gwalior where local king Veer Singh Bundela took matters into his own hands and intercepted Abul Fazal before reaching Allahabad. They had their fateful encounter at Antri where Abul Fazal had his head severed from his body before reaching Allahabad.
