A women-led monument of progressiveness

Literally translating to "Pearl Mosque" due to its sparkling façade, Moti Masjid is a majestic edifice that was commissioned by the illustrious Mughal empress Sikander Jahan Begum during the late 19th century. Renowned for her progressive ideals, Sikander Begum abolished slavery and championed women's empowerment in the city. During her reign, Sikander Jahan Begum embarked on an ambitious program of modernisation, which included the construction of numerous monuments, roads and bridges. The Moti Masjid was one of the most significant products of her vision, designed to not only serve as a place of worship but also to enhance the beauty of the city, while also symbolising empowerment for Muslim women in India. While bearing a stark resemblance to the Jama Masjid in Delhi, one of the distinctive features of the Moti Masjid is that its stones have been sculpted like flowers. With its pristine white marble facade, intricate carvings and serene atmosphere, Moti Masjid is the perfect place to soak in the rich fusion of Mughal and Islamic architectural styles while taking in peaceful surroundings.

Experience its distinctive features and visual harmony

Setting itself apart from other illustrious mosques, Moti Masjid captivates you with its exquisite blend of red-brick facade and white marble exterior, harmonising seamlessly to create visual opulence. Two majestic dark red minarets adorned with golden spikes exude elegance and grandeur, while intricate stone carvings resembling delicate flowers lend an enchanting allure to this sacred space.

Wander through its intricate gates, verandas, minarets, and canopies adorned with sandstone, and feel the cool touch of the flooring beneath your feet. Step into the main hall, crafted from pristine white marble, and a decorated archway invites you into a sanctuary of serenity. As you venture further, you will discover two ablution tanks near the eastern gate; their marble fountains offering a soothing melody to accompany the sacred ablution process, a cherished tradition in Muslim culture.

But the true gem awaits in the heart of the mosque – the prayer hall, in the shape of a pearl amidst the sandstone and marble. Elevated on a raised platform, it exudes an aura of majesty and reverence, drawing the eye and the soul towards its celestial beauty.

Find solace with gardens, fountains and beyond

Enter the mosque's precincts, and you will be greeted by sprawling gardens teeming with verdant beauty. Two marble fountains, shaped like bathing tanks, offer a serene space ideal for contemplation and relaxation. If you are a photography enthusiast, you will find yourself enraptured by its sublime architecture, leaving an indelible impression on artistic sensibilities. Beyond its architectural grandeur, Moti Masjid offers an idyllic setting for worship and introspection, fostering an atmosphere of tranquillity and spiritual communion.
