A temple that never met its completion

Amidst the serene landscapes of Bhojpur, about 28 kilometres from Bhopal, stands the grand Bhojeshwar Temple, dedicated to Lord Shiva. This spiritual and architectural marvel bears witness to the legacy of the Rajput dynasty and the devotion of its patron, Raja Bhoj, the founder of Bhopal.

According to legend, Raja Bhoj's ambition was to build the temple in a single day. However, as fate would have it, the temple's construction was never fully completed. Some say that it was because of a natural calamity, the fact that they were short on resources, or that Raja Bhoj had to divert his attention and resources towards defending the Somnath Temple from the Mughals.

Nonetheless, the Bhojeshwar Temple is a captivating relic, housing one of the tallest shivlings (forms of Lord Shiva) in the world. It is a silent witness to the triumphs and tribulations that have shaped the rich heritage of Madhya Pradesh's past.

Unearthing a forgotten gem

For centuries, the Bhojeshwar Temple lay forgotten, deteriorating over time into little more than a 'pile of rocks'. However, as efforts to restore it began, an intriguing story unfolded, unveiling the temple's former splendour and the ambitious vision that initially brought it to life.

As the excavations commenced, a gaping hole in the temple's roof appeared. The revered lingam had been exposed to the open sky for hundreds of years, its form battered and damaged by the elements. But the revelations did not end there. As the excavations continued, a tantalising glimpse of the original vision emerged – one that had envisioned the Bhojeshwar Temple as the centrepiece of a grand, Khajuraho-esque temple complex.

The Archaeological Survey of India restored the Bhojeshwar Temple to its former glory. A fibreglass cast adorned with a meticulously designed dome was carefully placed, its sculptural figures playing musical instruments lending an air of enchantment. The damaged lingam, the heart of this sacred space, was repaired, its timeless form again rising to the heavens.

Today, this forgotten gem stands as a shining beacon that illuminates the rich cultural side of Madhya Pradesh.

A true architectural enigma

The Bhojeshwar Temple is a true architectural enigma, a fusion of unconventional design elements defying the traditional norms of temple construction. As you ascend the iron stairway to the inner sanctum, you cannot help but be overwhelmed by the grandeur of the 7.5-foot-tall Shivling placed on a 21-foot-tall platform.

But the temple's remarkable features extend beyond its central deity. The absence of a traditional Mandapa, or entrance hall, and the use of a rectilinear roof in place of the more common curved Shikhara (spire) make you wonder about the ancient site's modern aesthetic appeal. Its entry wall is adorned with intricate bell carvings, and patterns are also found on its pillars, adding a mesmerising layer of visual complexity to the overall design.

Prepare to be astounded by the temple's massive stone dome, which is 40 feet high. Four monumental pillars support this architectural masterpiece, offering a glimpse into ancient artistry. With such magnificent architecture, it's no wonder this sacred temple has made its way onto the tentative list of UNESCO World Heritage Sites.

Glimpses into the king's ambition

The temple stands out for its unique feature: intricate line drawings depicting the temple itself and other structures proposed for the site. These drawings include layouts, mandapas (hall connected to the sanctum), pillars, lintels, doorways, capitals, and column spacings, all meticulously carved into nearby rocks. They mirror the temple's existing design, unveiling the original construction plans. Strewn across the site are unused stone masonry blocks and earthen ramps once used to hoist them, offering tangible remnants of the construction process. Additionally, remnants of a dam along the Betwa River, built to form a grand artificial lake, offer glimpses into Raja Bhoj's ambitious vision and the exhaustive efforts behind temple construction.

At its most incredible

While you can visit the hallowed halls of Bhojeshwar Temple at any time of the year, it is recommended that you visit it during the auspicious occasion of Maha Shivaratri when the temple is at its most incredible. As the annual Bhojpur Utsav celebration takes over the grounds, the air is filled with celebration, inviting you to join the devotees who have gathered to honour the deity enshrined within.

As the sun dips below the horizon, the Bhojeshwar Temple is bathed in the warm glow of flickering diyas (earthen lamps), creating an ethereal ambience that heightens the sense of reverence and celebration. Join the faithful as they offer their prayers, and feel the energy of the crowd pulse through you.
