Whether you're drawn to its architectural marvels, cultural landmarks, or natural wonders, Bhopal promises an unforgettable adventure filled with discovery and wonder.
Of Kings and Begums
Originally known as Bhojpal, named after the 11th century Paramara King Bhoja, Bhopal's captivating narrative began in the 17th century with the reign of Dost Mohammad Khan, an Afghan warrior who shaped its destiny after the passing of Gond queen Rani Kamlapati. In the 1720s, he built the Fatehgarh Fort, which developed into the city of Bhopal over the next few decades.
Bhopal thrived under the rule of powerful Begums, female leaders who reigned from 1819 to 1926. These remarkable women, like Qudsia Begum and Kaikhusrau Jahan, left a lasting mark on the city. They were known for their wise leadership, building schools, roads, and beautiful monuments that you can still see today.
One of the shining testaments of the reign of Qudsia Begum, also known as Gohar Begum, is the magnificent Gohar Mahal. The palace's courtyard is a true work of art, with its large water tank and fountains, creating a serene atmosphere and making you want to relax there for a while. The palatial halls and spacious surrounding rooms, once venues for social and cultural events, now offer a glimpse into the glorious past of the palace, transporting you back in time.
Dive into the city of lakes
Come and discover the shimmering oasis of tranquillity in the twin lakes of Bhopal, where azure waters sparkle under the gentle caress of the sun. Fondly referred to as the ‘City of Lakes,’ Bhopal invites you to unwind amidst its serene waters. Legend has it that these lakes hold tales of royalty and romance, with begums of yesteryears gracing the tranquil waters in lotus barges beneath the moonlit sky. Explore these timeless tales that add a touch of enchantment to the lakes, captivating your imagination.
Meet the Bhojtal (also known as Upper Lake) and Lower Lake, Bhopal's prized gems, where serenity stretches as far as the eye can see. Beyond the breathtaking views, they are your havens for peace and rejuvenation. Take a boat ride, have a lakeside picnic, or simply stroll along the shore for some nature therapy.
