History
The Thrissur Zoo and State Museum were established in 1885 during the reign of Rama Varma XV, the Maharaja of Cochin. Initially known as the 'Trichur Zoo,' it was one of the first zoos to be established in India. Over the years, the zoo has undergone several renovations and expansions to enhance its facilities and exhibits.
Wildlife exhibits
The zoo is home to a wide variety of animal species, birds, and reptiles. Visitors can observe some animals such as Tigers, Deer, Lions, Sloth bears, Monkeys, Hippopotamus, Camels, Crocodiles of the North eastern hills and Lion - tailed Macaques. There is an exclusive park for snakes, where Cobras, Pythons, Kraits, Vipers and Rat Snakes are on exhibit. It is also a birdwatchers' paradise with Pink Pelicans, Emu, Hornbill, and African Grey Parrots as some of the varieties of birds at the zoo. Butterflies such as Blue Mormon, Common Mine, Southern Bordwing and Motted Emigrant are also present which add the charm to the zoo.
Conservation efforts

The State museum

The museum features an exquisite wood carving collection, metal scultpures, Kathakali figures, ancient jewellery and some beautiful traditional Kerala lamps.
