Unveiling nature's eclectic abode

Located in the heart of the Western Ghats is a natural marvel and a paradise for wildlife enthusiasts and nature lovers, the Agasthyavanam Biological Park. This fascinating park derives its name from the Agasthyamalai Peak, which is situated within its boundaries and is considered a sacred abode by many. The park's landscape is dotted with lush green forests, streams, and waterfalls, which offer a stunning backdrop for the diverse wildlife that inhabits the region.

A symphony of life

Named after the captivating Agastimalai Agasthyakoodam Peak visible in the distance, this park has a notable history. In 1992, the Government of India established a scientific committee to explore the potential for a Biological Park in the severely degraded Kottur area. The committee proposed the establishment of a biological park with the aim of rejuvenating, preserving, and propagating selected flora and fauna. Despite the area's minimal plant and animal population, it was noted for its ample water resources, fertile soil, and suitable climate for the growth of flora and fauna.

Agasthya Vanam Biological Park allocates 17.5 sq. km. for natural regeneration, intended to evolve into a dense forest. The remaining portion is earmarked for systematic conservation initiatives. Forest authorities plan to establish conservatories for diverse plant species, aiming to reintroduce, produce, and breed wild animals and birds. Despite receiving substantial rainfall, rapid drainage to the Arabian Sea renders the area barren for six months. To address this, authorities intend to construct small check dams to create ponds, ensuring humidity and moisture persist for vegetation growth during the dry season. The park is under the administration of the Wildlife Warden, Trivandrum.
