A historical marvel
Historical marvel, located among lush forests and rivers, the fort provides breathtaking scenery. Within its walls resides Palakkad Special Sub Jail as well as Anjaneya Swamy Temple dedicated to Lord Hanuman located on its eastern side. Tipu Sultan and his warriors held this temple sacred, believing it provided protection from their adversaries. It also featured a carving of Anjaneya facing south while gazing westward. This feature of the inner fort wall held special meaning for both. Today, the fort has been transformed to serve multiple functions; housing government offices, temples, museums and an auditorium known as Rappadi; managed by Archaeological Society of India. Adjacent to it lies Kota Maidanam (Fort Grounds), once used to house Tipu Sultan's army's elephants and horses but now hosting public gatherings, exhibitions, cricket matches and football matches.
An intriguing transition
The Palakkad Fort boasts an expansive history, serving various purposes throughout its existence. Constructed as a defensive stronghold initially, its use became prominent during multiple conflicts between armies such as Tipu Sultan's and the British. Under Mysore Kingship, this structure served as the tahsildar's office (tax collector's office).
