Where wilderness thrives and harmony resides

Nestled in the Western Ghats of Kerala, India, lies a sanctuary of unparalleled beauty and biodiversity: Periyar. Spanning over 925 square kilometres, this region encompasses three distinct yet interconnected sanctuaries: Periyar National Park, Periyar Tiger Reserve, and Periyar Wildlife Sanctuary. Each holds a unique story of conservation, coexistence, and the relentless pursuit of harmony between man and nature.

A tapestry of history

Periyar's journey began in 1950 when Nellikkampatty Game Sanctuary was established, laying the foundation for what would later become Periyar Wildlife Sanctuary. Over the years, its importance in conserving the region's flora and fauna became evident, leading to its designation as a national park in 1982. In 1978, recognizing the urgent need to protect the endangered Bengal tiger, Periyar Tiger Reserve was established within the sanctuary's boundaries.

Sanctuary of life

Periyar National Park, with its dense forests, grasslands, and perennial rivers, is a sanctuary of life teeming with diverse flora and fauna. The park is home to over 35 species of mammals, including elephants, tigers, leopards, gaurs, and sambar deer. Its avian residents include over 265 species of birds, making it a paradise for birdwatchers.

The majesty of tigers

Periyar Tiger Reserve, spread across 777 square kilometres, serves as a vital refuge for the majestic Bengal tiger. With an estimated population of 35-40 tigers, the reserve plays a crucial role in their conservation. Here, amidst the dense foliage and tranquil waters of Periyar Lake, these apex predators roam freely, embodying the spirit of the wild.

A legacy of conservation

At the heart of Periyar's success lies a shared commitment to conservation and sustainable development. The Kerala Forest Department, along with local communities and conservation organizations, works tirelessly to protect the sanctuary's natural heritage. Efforts include habitat restoration, anti-poaching patrols, and community-based ecotourism initiatives that empower local communities while preserving the region's ecological balance.
