A sanctuary once established for tea plantation workers

Picture this: A beautiful, pastel-hued edifice adorned with charming wood-framed windows standing proud amidst the rolling green hills of Munnar, where the main shrine houses an elegant statue of Christ and the Virgin Mary. A terrace from where you can breathe in spectacular views of verdant hills, lush valleys, emerald tea plantations and pristine rivers.

Welcome to Mount Carmel Church, the first Roman Catholic church in the Idukki district of Munnar. It is an enchanting spiritual landmark with Indian-inspired architecture that blends seamlessly into the landscape.

This idyllic sanctuary was established in the 1880s for Tamil Nadu's tea plantation workers by Father Alphonse of the Spanish Missionary Society. His successor, Fr. Blasius, OCD, continued his work, and Fr. Salustin, OCD, built a grotto in 1938 that still stands today.

As you enter its hallowed halls, you will feel the aura of simplicity and tranquillity. You can participate in the daily Holy Mass held here, which is attended by hundreds of devout from nearby villages.

Film aficionados will also recognize Mount Carmel Church as the backdrop in the iconic scenes from Life of Pi.

Incredible, isn't it?

Unmissable wonders around the cityscape

Beyond the church, nature's wonders await amidst the lush landscapes of the Western Ghats. Dive into the world of tea at Kannan Devan Hills Plantations's Tea Museum, where history comes alive through antique photographs and century-old artefacts like the original 1905 tea roller.
