Kerala's first national park

Within the verdant embrace of Kerala's Western Ghats lies an incredible realm of wilderness waiting to mesmerize you with its natural marvels.

Welcome to the Eravikulam National Park, established in 1978 as the first national park in Kerala. Adorned with forested hills and rolling slopes, with breathtaking vistas of lush tea plantations and clouds caressing the landscape, this slice of paradise in Kerala is a treat for the senses.

Located in the Devikulam Taluk of Idukki district in Kerala, the wildlife park can be reached via Munnar. After reaching Munnar, you would need to take the road going to Rajamala to reach this national park.

The park is a protected area that is divided into three distinct regions: the core area, the buffer area, and the tourism area. Visitors are only allowed to access the tourism area located in Rajamala, which is beyond the road entry into Eravikulam.

This park is a haven for numerous endangered species, including the majestic Nilgiri Tahr (an endangered mountain goat species), the elusive Lion-tailed Macaques, and the graceful Nilgiri Langurs. Seasonal visits by wild elephants add to its biodiversity, offering visitors a firsthand glimpse into nature's splendour.

Eravikulam National Park's primary aim was to safeguard the endangered Nilgiri tahr. Today, it beckons wildlife enthusiasts with its rich biodiversity, which includes over 130 bird species, 26 mammal species, and a myriad of butterflies, amphibians, and reptiles that thrive within its pristine confines.

The park is also known as the "Land of Neelakurinji." Every 12 years, visitors are treated to the breathtaking spectacle of purplish-blue Neelakurinji flowers adorning its landscapes. This natural phenomenon is just one of the many treasures that await within this pristine sanctuary.

Trek through the wonders of nature

Eravikulam National Park prohibits private vehicles inside and instead offers an immersive safari tour that lasts 2-3 hours on foot.

Trekking through the park unravels its hidden wonders for adventurers. Traversing the terrain soon brings you across more than 40 varieties of beautiful flowers in their seasonal blooms. Embark on a journey through lush rainforests, follow the course of streams, and marvel at cascading waterfalls that punctuate the landscape with their splendour.

As you explore, you'll also see the majestic Anamudi peak, standing sentinel at a towering height of 2695 meters, a true sight to behold.
