A wanderer’s dream

Kerala, God’s own country comes with a full package of activities, ranging from fishing, backwater gazing, and boating to cruising. The place is full of scenic beauty, flora and fauna and undoubtedly the sites are a pleasure to the eyes. From travel enthusiasts who like adventures to people who migrate in the hope of finding peace, Kerala serves all purposes for tourists.

One such adventure that should surely be on your itinerary is the Kumarakom Houseboat Cruise. Yes, you read it right! House on boats, where you can spend the entire night amidst amazing activities and finger-licking good food.

A home that beckons

All the houseboats are designed like a house consisting of a bedroom, bathroom, kitchen, lounge, and sun deck. The boats are built of jackfruit logs and coconut fibre. Some of the boats are even fully air-conditioned, so you can host corporate events or family functions inside.

You also get electrical items, like electric fans, geysers in the bathroom, and a television. The insides are covered with metha payas or Kerala mats. Some of the elite houseboats are also two-storied, and you have fishing rods, newspapers, CDs, DVD players, speakers, etc.

Well-trained crews maintain these houseboats in Kumarakom Backwaters. There is usually a captain, a guide, a cook, and two oarsmen to support the cruise. You are promised a comfortable ride for the long hours in the water, and it will be a lifetime memorable experience. There will be eco-friendly facilities for the disposal of waste and sewage. Some boats also use traditional lanterns to enhance the ambience inside.

A culture of hospitality

You should try houseboats at least once when visiting Kumarakom Backwaters. You get to experience alot of what Kumarakom’s culture has to offer, like massages, market trips, amazing food, and fishing. These are mainly Kettuvellam and Punting houseboats with 1/2/3/4 occupancy bedrooms to match all tourists' requirements. These houseboats are available in categories like Gold Star, Silver Star, and Green Palm based on the facilities they provide. There are both day boat tours and night boat tours to fulfil all tourists’ demands. You can avail of any of the boats based on your itinerary.

The life on water

If you do not want to spend the entire night in the houseboat but also want to experience the feel, day boats are the best option. Day boats start from Kumarakom to Alleppey and then take a back trip to Kumarakom on the same day. During the journey, you get to witness the paddy fields and there is a fine breeze making the weather pleasant. You can get down at Alleppey village to explore the local customs and arts. The village is beautiful and has maintained its simplicity to date. You also get to have delicious food delicacies in the day boat.

Unlike day boat tours, night houseboat tours begin during midday. You get to enjoy freshly prepared meals and beverages. There is a small halt at the backwater market to get fresh produce for your meals. You get to watch the sunset and the evening activities of the native people there. Dinners are served under dim light and the boats sail back early in the morning so you get to spend the entire night in the boat.

Plan your perfect trip

If you are travelling by air, Cochin International Airport is the nearest one to Kumarakom Backwaters. It is 80 kilometres away from the main city. You can hire a private taxi to reach the backwaters. If you are taking a train, Kottayam railway station is the closest, about 16 kilometres from the backwaters. Again, taking a cab will be ideal to reach the backwaters. People travelling to Kerala usually want to travel in water as much as they can, so if you are travelling by water, Kumarakom is accessible from Muhamma through a boat ride. The views during the journey are very pleasant to watch. If you are looking for an economical option, buses are the best. The bus connectivity in Kerala for all major cities is convenient. After you arrive at the Kumarakom Backwaters, you can easily catch the houseboat from there. The day boats start early in the morning while night boats start later in midday. Since a lot of tourists keep coming in all seasons and houseboats are on everyone’s itinerary, it is a good idea to confirm your booking beforehand to avoid last-minute chaos.

Kumarakom Backwaters are accessible on all days at all times, but if you go during Onam in September, you will be amazed to see the breath-taking boat race. During the festival of Onam, Snake boat races are organised for visitors to watch. Another adventurous one is Iruttu Kuthi which requires 50 oarsmen and the synchronisation they maintain is a must-watch.

Kumarakom from November to February is perfect. This period is perfect for indulging in houseboat cruises along the tranquil waterways, birdwatching at the Kumarakom Bird Sanctuary, and exploring the vibrant culture and heritage of the region.
