A strategic hub of commerce and industry
Willingdon Island was created in 1936 by dredging the materials excavated from the construction of the modern port of Kochi. The island was formed by reclaiming land from the backwaters of Kochi and was initially intended to serve as a strategic shipping and trade hub for the region. The British colonial administration envisioned Willingdon Island as a modern maritime facility to support the growing trade and commerce activities in Kochi.
Over the years, Willingdon Island has evolved into a major commercial and industrial hub in Kochi. The island is home to several important facilities, including the Port of Kochi, which is one of the largest and busiest seaports in India. The island also houses various shipping companies, cargo-handling facilities, warehouses, and industrial establishments, contributing significantly to the region's economy and maritime infrastructure.
