An architectural marvel of blended styles
The Santa Cruz Basilica is renowned for its stunning architectural style, which blends elements of Portuguese, Dutch, and Indo-European architecture. The church features a magnificent facade with twin spires, intricate carvings, and a whitewashed exterior. The interior of the basilica is adorned with beautiful paintings, frescoes, and stained-glass windows depicting scenes from the Bible and the life of Jesus Christ. Seven large canvas paintings, including a magnificent reproduction of Leonardo da Vinci's ‘Last Supper,’ grace the walls. The artistry extends to the ceilings adorned with scenes from the Via Crucis, offering a poignant reflection on Christ's passion.
A historic legacy
The history of the Santa Cruz Basilica dates back to the arrival of the Portuguese in Kochi in the 15th century. The original church, built by the Portuguese in 1505, was later demolished and replaced by a new structure in 1558 by the then Bishop of Kochi, Dom Francisco Ros after the original church was destroyed by the Dutch.
