Vijayapura, formerly known as Vijayapura, is a city in the Indian state of Karnataka, renowned for its rich history, cultural heritage and architectural marvels. Its history spans over several centuries, marked by the rise and fall of empires, the confluence of diverse cultures and the patronage of art and architecture by successive rulers. It is situated in the northern part of the Karnataka Plateau, about 10 km northwest of the Don River (a tributary of the Krishna River). Vijayapura is famous for its architectural marvels is also an important commercial district in the state of Karnataka.

Historical background

Vijayapura history can be traced back to ancient times, with references to the region found in various historical texts and inscriptions. From the late 15th century to the late 17th century. Under the patronage of the Adil Shahi rulers, Vijayapura flourished as a centre of art, culture and architecture. The city witnessed a golden age of building activity, with the construction of magnificent palaces, mosques, mausoleums and fortifications and the city became a melting pot of Hindu, Muslim and Jain cultures. The city's administration changed hands frequently as time passed and came under the control of various successor states before eventually becoming part of the colonial British Empire in the 19th century.
