The construction of the temple took place during the hundredth year of the Hoysala dynasty and has so far remained a major place for worship. Those temple is devoted to the fierce form of Goddess Durga, Devi Chamundeshwari, who defeated the demon Mahishasura and saved the earth from destruction. According to the legend, Mahishasura, the buffalo demon who terrorized the entire universe, has to surrender before the fierce goddess. This Goddess is the core of this temple's spiritual essence. The temple has been an object of royal patronage from several dynasties, the kings of Mysuru seeing Chamundeshwari as their family goddess.

The beauty and glory of the Chamundi Hill Temple

The architectural layout of Chamundi Hill Temple is in Dravian style with a gopuram (entrance tower), carved pillars, and a decorative design. There is a special ceremonial scene that adorns the entrance with beautiful and mythical images, those of gods and goddess, and it is this entrance that sets the spiritual tone of what lies within.

The inner temple or Garbhagriha, which is the center of all shrines, is the place that worships the goddess Chamundeshwari in which the goddess is depicted at their highest power. Queued in front of the sanctum are intricately carved pillars, and the walls are depicted, in scenes of Hindu mythology, predominantly portraying icons of the goddess, and also her manifestations and divine works. Other than that, there's a statute of Mahishasura near the temple entrance, depicted overcoming his evilness.
