As the traditional seat of the Wadiyar dynasty, the city functioned as the capital of the Kingdom of Mysore for almost six centuries (1399 to 1947). However a mention for another brave ruler Tipu Sultan is synonymous with Mysuru, he was called “Sher-e-Mysore” (the tiger of Mysore). He was a modern ruler, and there were several innovations during his rule, including a new coinage system and calender, and a new land revenue system that encouraged the Mysore silk industry and toys industry. He encouraged science and innovation and pioneered rocket artillery and the iron clad Mysorean rockets were used to defend the city of Mysuru when the British attacked.
