Buddha Vihar is situated in Kalaburagi, a city in the Indian state of Karnataka, earlier known as Gulbarga. It is located about 6 kms from district headquarters on Sedam Road near Gulbarga University The complex blends architectural features of eminent Buddhist centres of Sanchi, Sarnath, Ajanta and Nagpur and has been constructed conforming to traditional Buddhist architecture. Buddha Vihar showcases captivating artistic designs and a harmonious blend of architectural elements. Originally planned to be smaller, the construction, which commenced in 2002, was expanded into a grand complex by the Trust, making it one of the finest in South India. Buddha Vihar was officially inaugurated by His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama, the spiritual leader of the Tibetan people, on 7th January 2007. The Vihara embodies the principles of non-violence and global harmony.

About the structure

Buddha Vihar is spread across 18 acres and the main the structure stands on about 33000 square feet of land with 284 blocks on 170 pillars. The dome of the Vihar is 70 ft in height and 59 ft in diameter. The main dome is tiled with marble for a grand look. The majestic domed structure may remind one of the imposing Taj Mahal. The sculptures and art found here closely resemble the architectural characteristics of most of the prominent Buddhist centres in the country. At the basement, there's a meditation center, while the main building boasts four Ashoka pillars, each towering at 48 feet, representing the four noble truths. Inside the shrine, two finely crafted statues of Lord Buddha adorn the ground and first floors, alongside a 6-foot tall black stone idol sculpted by the renowned sculptor Ashoka Gudikara.
