Kalaburagi, previously known as Gulbarga, is a city in the Indian state of Karnataka. It serves as the administrative headquarters of the Kalaburagi district and is the largest city in North Karnataka. Located approximately 575 km north of Bangalore, the state capital, Kalaburagi holds strategic importance in the region. Gulbarga in Urdu roughly translates to a city of flowers and gardens. It was renamed as Kalaburagi in the year 2014. Kal-means stone and Bur means thorns in Kannada and the whole name represents "The Land of stones and thorns".

A city steeped in history
The history of Kalaburagi dates to the sixth century and is believed to have been under the control of the Rashtrakutas. Subsequently a series of dynasties ruled over this historic city. The prominent ones include the Chalukyas, Kalyani Kalachuris, Hoysalas and the Kakatiya kings of Warangal. The Kakatiya power was subdued in 1308 AD and the entire Deccan, including the district of Kalaburagi, passed under the control of the Delhi Sultanate. In the subsequent years Kalaburgi rose as the capital of Bahmani Sultanate before falling to Aurangzeb in 1687 and becoming a part of the Mughal Empire. In the years to come it became a part of the kingdom of Hyderabad finally merging with the Indian Union in 1948.
Renowned architectural splendours
Kalaburagi boasts a rich historical legacy that dates back centuries. Once a prominent centre of the Bahmani and Barid Shahi sultanates, the city is adorned with magnificent architectural marvels that stand as a testament to its glorious past. The imposing Kalaburagi Fort, built in the 14th century, is a symbol of the city's strategic importance and served as a stronghold for successive rulers.
The fort is said to have originally been built by Raja Gulchand of Warangal and was later strengthened by Alauddin Hasan Bahman Shah, the ruler of the Bahmani dynasty. Also located close by is the Malkheda Fort which is situated around 40 km south-east of Kalaburagi, on the left bank of Kagina river, a tributary of the Bhima River. Another interesting site in the village is an ancient Mallinatha Basadi, which consists of a garbhagriha, a navaranga and a hazara. Many manuscripts written in popular languages like Kannada, Prakrit and Sanskrit have been discovered in this Basadi. Another historically important monument is Chor Gumbaz which is located on a hill with a 30 metre high hemispherical dome and corner towers with arches on each side. People visit this place to experience the echoes that the monument generates and at least seven echoes can be heard inside here.
