The mystical ‘monkey temple’ in Hampi

Sitting atop the majestic Anjaneya Hill, and about 2 kilometres away from the famous Virupaksha Temple, lies a treasured Yantradharaka Hanuman Temple, also known as the ‘Monkey Temple’. Deep into the heart of this holy site, where time itself seems to pause, the aura of devotion fills the place. For five centuries, this sacred space has stood as a symbol of the unwavering faith in Lord Hanuman.

Sri Vyasaraja, the esteemed Rajaguru of the Vijayanagara Kingdom and a luminary in the realm of Dwaita philosophy established this temple. With each step, as you trek the sacred slopes of Anjeyanadri Hill, you will start engaging with history and spirituality. In these sacred confines lies a place that blesses the souls seeking enlightenment.

A tale of unyielding devotion

Here at the realm where legend and history intertwine, you can discover the legacy of Sri Vyasaraja, the revered Dwaita Philosopher and Rajguru of the Vijayanagara Empire. The ancient rocks of Hampi, where Sri Vyasaraja used to draw a picture of Lord Hanuman with charcoal, each illustration vanished in the wind. For twelve consecutive days, the mysterious disappearance of Sri Vyasaraja's charcoal sketches persisted until the guru humbly beseeched Lord Hanuman to reveal himself. On the twelfth day, the culmination of unwavering devotion bore fruit as Lord Hanuman appeared in front of his devotee and blessed him. According to another legend, it is believed that Lord Rama and Lord Hanuman might have crossed paths on this very soil for the first time. This temple is one of the 732 sanctuaries consecrated by Sri Vyasaraja and stands as a tribute to when gods and mortals communed in perfect harmony.

As you tread upon this sacred ground, you will get to see the Yantrodharaka Hanuman Stotram. The grand form of Lord Hanuman, decked with hexagonal amulets and encircled by twelve monkey idols, each a represention of a day of devout prayer. This immersive design, immortalised upon a single stone boulder, stands tall at eight feet in height.

The adventurous path of spirituality

To reach this sanctuary, you need to bring out the adventurer in you and climb over 500 steps which might take over 45 minutes to an hour. But don’t worry. The panoramic views that await atop the mountain surpass all expectations and make your efforts worth it. Amidst the ancient ruins that beautify the landscape of Hampi, the Yantrodharaka Hanuman Temple emerges as a beacon of resilience.
